11 year-old struck by vehicle while riding bike
This past Wednesday, around 7:30 pm, Maricopa Police responded to the intersection of Goles Drive and Venture Road, in Rancho El Dorado, on a report of a vehicle versus pedestrian injury accident.
When officers arrived on scene the Maricopa Fire Department was giving aid to an injured 11-year-old boy. The victim was responsive at the time and was identified and the child’s guardian was summoned to the scene.
The victim was transported to the Maricopa County Medical Center in stable condition by Southwest Ambulance, with non-life threatening injuries.
The injured child told officers he observed the vehicle traveling on Goles Drive towards Rancho El Dorado Parkway. He stated the vehicle was not going very fast and believed he could cross the street prior to the vehicle passing him. Unfortunately, the juvenile misjudged the distance and was struck by the vehicle in the roadway.
The driver of the vehicle stated they did not see the boy until he was on the hood of the involved driver’s vehicle. Doctors anticipate that the child will make a full recovery.
“Many vehicle accidents, like this one, happen during the hours surrounding dusk and dawn, said Maricopa Police spokesman Sgt Stephen Judd. “As the light conditions change, it becomes more difficult for drivers, bike riders and pedestrians alike to judge distance and speed.”
The Maricopa Police Department encourages everyone to be more mindful of things around them as they drive during these times of the day and to be extra cautious as you drive through our city’s residential neighborhoods. Parents should continually talk to their children about proper safety rules for crossing the street while riding their bikes or on foot.
