A Thanksgiving message from the Maricopa Police Department

Maricopa PoliceThis Thursday Americans nationwide will celebrate all we have to be thankful for. Many of us will travel to enjoy the long holiday weekend together with family and friends. The U.S. Department of Transportation estimates that over 90% of Americans will travel by car to reach their destination, making Thanksgiving the most heavily travelled holiday of the year.

Sadly, Thanksgiving is also our nation’s deadliest holiday period. Last year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 389 passenger vehicle occupants died in motor vehicle crashes. Of those, 55% were unrestrained. Many of these needless deaths could have been averted by simply buckling up a seat belt. Some other major contributors to holiday traffic fatalities include;

    Driving tired
    Driving under the influence of alcohol of drugs (DUI)
    Speeding

The Maricopa Police and Fire Departments wish to encourage all who travel this holiday season to remember to buckle-up and drive safety.  Fill your holidays will wonderful happy memories. Together, we can make a difference by ensuring families and friends are united in joy and thanksgiving instead of sadness and mourning due to the needless loss of a loved one.

To all, we wish a happy and safe holiday.
