Two separate incidents delay traffic on SR347
Maricopa Road (SR347) kept the Maricopa Fire Department busy Thursday, with a morning incident blocking southbound traffic, and a nighttime collision causing frustration for those headed north.
A semi-truck, headed to the Butterfield Landfill, caught fire around 10:00 am in the southbound lanes at Milepost 178. Units from Maricopa Fire and Gila River Fire, as well as Maricopa Police and Arizona Department of Public Safety officers, responded to the scene. The blaze was extinguished quickly, but traffic was reduced to one lane while firefighters mopped up.

Then, this evening around 8:00 pm, a Dodge Neon was involved in a collision with a full-size Chevy pickup near the Santa Rosa Wash bridge. Witnesses on the scene claim the pickup was driving the wrong direction in the northbound lanes.
Maricopa Police and Fire, as well as DPS, GIla River EMT, and Southwest Ambulance responded to the scene. The driver of the truck was treated on scene, then transported to Chandler Regional Hospital for further evaluation. The driver of the Neon suffered only minor cuts on his hand and was treated and released on scene.
Northbound traffic was reduced to one lane, and was stopped completely at times while the accident was cleaned up.

Busy day out there. It is great to know that our first responders are able to deal with whatever comes at them.
As we come up on the hollidays, please remember these photos. Seatbelts save lives.
Stay sharp and drive safe. You never know what will come at you on the road.
I must say that the passenger compartment of that Neon appears to have held up well against the forces posed by a head-on collision on a highway. Might have to look at the Neon on my next vehicle purchase.
