Cooler weather brings fun community events

(Photo by Howard Waggner)Now that the weather’s cooling down, many fun local events are just around the corner!

Tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon is the sixth annual Founder’s Day celebration at Pacana Park.  The event runs from 2:00 to 8:00 pm, and will feature local bands throughout the day, various food and specialty vendors, an artist village, local history displays, and fun activities for citizens of all ages.  The Maricopa High School Band will also be performing.

Community of Hope Church will also be hosting a petting zoo and pony rides on their five acre property adjacent to Pacana’s south parking lot, which will be the vendor area.  Ken’s Korral will be providing the petting zoo while Hidden Valley Stables’ wranglers, in full costume, will be leading kids around on the ponies.

Those wishing to help the community can visit the Alan Marchione for City Council booth.  Local resident Lisa Durst wil be collecting canned food to benefit the FOR Maricopa food bank.  Donors can enter into a raffle to win prizes provided by various local businesses.

Pacana Park is located on Porter Road, just south of Honeycutt Road.  For more information, visit the Founder’s Day website.

Events include a cricket spitting contest, bad bug displays, master gardeners on site to give tips, barley and beer making, information on water conservation practices, and all sorts of experiments and booths for all members of the community. This is a fun way to get hands on with farm equipment, precision agricultural equipment that drives itself, and much more!

The Maricopa Agricultural Center is located on Smith-Enke Road, east of White-Parker Road.  For more information, contact Nicole Dailey at (520) 316-6815.

There was not enough handicapped/disabled parking available at the Founders Day event.

There was an entire parking lot devoted to it, over 60 spaces and I am sure that exceeded ADA requirements.
