Motorcyclist injured in Santa Rosa Wash accident

A 34 year-old Maricopa man suffered extensive injuries to one of his legs Saturday evening when he crashed his dirt bike while riding in the Santa Rosa Wash.

The accident occurred under the railroad bridge by the Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway. The victim was discovered a short time later by two people walking through the wash, who then called 9-1-1.

Southwest Ambulance was able to bring their ambulance down to the accident scene in the wash. However, after being treated by paramedics, the victim was carried up the incline to the road where a medical transport helicopter was waiting. The man was transported to Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix for further evaluation and treatment.

According to authorities, the man was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. “This gentleman was lucky to have only an isolated leg injury from the accident,” said Maricopa Fire Department spokesman Brad Pitassi. “Each year thousands of people die from motorcycle and bicycle accident when no helmets are worn. It is extremely important that people wear a DOT-compliant helmet when they ride to help prevent serious head injuries if involved in an accident.”

Pitassi went on to say that riders should also practice safe riding habits, like wearing brightly colored protective gear, and not ride alone in places like the wash.
