Second Relay for Life fundraiser surpasses goal

(Howard Waggner/Maricopa360.com) – Residents of Maricopa helped light up the night during the 2nd annual Relay For Life walk, this past weekend, at Pacana Park.

The event is a fundraiser for cancer research and runs from before sundown until sunrise, signifying the fact that cancer never sleeps and neither can the fight for a cure. The walk featured teams that had at least one person on the course at all times.

At one point, the lights at the park were extinguished and walkers lit candles to lead the way. They were also guided by luminaries that were decorated in honor of those that have fallen, are fighting or have survived the disease’s effects.

This year’s relay had a target goal of $100,000, which was surpassed and was estimated at $110,000 by 8:00 pm.
