Maricopa sailor dies on overseas mission

The US Department of Defense announced today the death of a sailor who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Kyler L. Estrada, 21, of Maricopa, died February 14th as a result of a non-combat related training incident in Africa.

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer released the following statement:

“I ask that all Arizonans join me in prayer today as we mourn the loss of a true Arizona hero. On Tuesday, February 14, Petty Officer 3rd Class Kyler L. Estrada, 21, was killed during a training incident in the Republic of Djibouti, where he had been supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. Petty Officer Estrada, a Navy hospital corpsman, had been assigned to the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit at Camp Pendleton, California. He was a resident of Maricopa and graduate of Queen Creek High School.

“This tragic death is a stark reminder of the risk which our men and women in uniform face on a daily basis as they carry out their mission to protect our nation. I ask that you say a prayer for Petty Officer Estrada and his wife and family during this difficult time. Please also keep in your thoughts the other brave members of our armed forces. Their service and sacrifice to the United States of America can never be taken for granted nor forgotten.

“In honor of Petty Officer 3rd Class Kyler L. Estrada, I have ordered that all state flags be flown at half- staff until sunset today, February 16th, 2012. Additionally, I will ask that flags be lowered on the day of Petty Officer Estrada’s interment, for which arrangements are pending.”
