Martin: Governor should have also pushed for increased border enforcement

Arizona State Treasurer Dean MartinArizona State Treasurer Dean Martin thanks Governor Jan Brewer for heeding his call to sign HB1070 into law, despite the harmful delay.

Martin said, “Despite her initial delay, I’m pleased Governor Brewer will sign SB1070. This legislation gives law enforcement the tools they need to keep people and property in Arizona safe. Unfortunately Arizona became a national spectacle as Governor Brewer waited until this week to read a bill that was introduced and debated months ago. It was troubling that it took the urging of myself and many others before she felt compelled to act on an issue that has affected Arizona for decades.”

Hess: Position Statement on SB1070

Barry HessThe Governor and others have fooled the people of Arizona into thinking this bill has something to do with fixing the problems created by illegal immigration—it does not. Even a cursory reading of the bill makes it abundantly clear that it serves only to infringe upon the rights of all Arizonans by effectively creating a national ID while giving officers of the State complete immunity for violations against individuals’ rights, and making the taxpayers foot the legal costs that will inevitably follow.

The legislation purports to give police officers (and others) the authority to stop suspected illegals and detain them indefinitely until proof of Citizenship is established. Even before the legislation goes into effect, the police have already begun what is bound to be an aggressive policy of profiling, stopping and harassing legal Citizens with impunity. Skin color has nothing to do with it.

Maricopa City HallFriday morning, students from Maricopa High School assembled to protest the passage of SB 1070 (the immigration bill). The protest, organized by students, began peacefully at the high school. Upon being asked to return to class by school administrators, students took the protest to the streets, where one student was detained for obstructing traffic when he stood in front of a car. The student was taken inside, issued a civil traffic citation and was released.

Students fearing that he had been arrested began to march to Maricopa City Hall to protest his alleged arrest. Healthy families through drug intervention

Pinal CountyFLORENCE, AZ – Sometimes mottos like “just say no to drugs” are not effective in deterring kids from experimenting with drugs.  An early brush with law enforcement can be enough to straighten out bad behavior.  Other times, the young person finds refuge in drug use and becomes a repeat offender.  That is when a judge may recommend the repeat offender enter the Drug Court, a special court program with the objective of intense intervention to get these young people living a clean, drug-free lifestyle.

Every Wednesday in Casa Grande, Pinal County Superior Court Judge Stephen McCarville presides over a courtroom of youth and parents and reviews each case individually with the Drug Court team.  The Drug Court team consists of the judge, a prosecuting attorney, the youth’s defense attorney and sometimes a counselor, probation staff or someone from the school.

Opinion: Arizona tired of illegal immigration

Steve MillerIn a speech this morning, just before Arizona House Bill #2070 was signed into law, President Obama called Arizona’s efforts to legislate illegal immigration “misguided”.  The representatives of the people have spoken.  This afternoon, our governor ratified the law passed in our legislature.  Misguided or not, the people have spoken.

We have said that we are tired of both the federal government and local law enforcement looking the other way on the issue of illegal immigration.  We are tired of being rear-ended by Juan Pedro, finding out that he has no insurance, no drivers license, and then watching as he walks away to do it again another day – because the officer handling the call couldn’t ask if he were a legal citizen of the United States.
