2010 Maricopa Candidate Forum is this weekend
In an unprecedented show of unity, all four of Maricopa’s major media outlets are partnering together with the Maricopa Chamber of Commerce to host a candidate forum for the 2010 City of Maricopa elections.
The Communicator, InMaricopa.com, the Maricopa Monitor and Maricopa360.com are working in conjunction with the chamber to host the 2010 Maricopa Candidate Forum both for the mayoral and council candidates.
The event will be happening this Saturday, January 30th, at the University of Arizona’s Maricopa Agricultural Center.
A reception, where attendees can meet the candidates one-on-one, starts thing off at 5:00 pm. At 6:00, the mayoral candidates will field questions from a four-person panel for approximately an hour and a half. Then, after a short break, it’s the council candidates’ turn.

Pinal County looking for storm damage victims
If your business, home, land or property sustained damage due to last week’s severe storms, Pinal County Emergency Management needs to hear from you.
County officials are preparing a preliminary damage assessment that will be used to determine if residents, businesses or land owners qualify for state or federal storm recovery assistance.
The county has established a hotline at (520) 866-6942 to report any damage sustained on or after January 21st related to the storms, which may include flooding, water damage, landscape damage, loss of crops or livestock, and damage to buildings, cars or other physical property.

First author visit scheduled for Maricopa Library
The Friends of the Maricopa Public Library announced that they have scheduled the first in a series of author visits at the Maricopa Public Library.
On Saturday, March 13th, the Friends will host award-winning author, Conrad J Storad. Storad is the author of more than 30 science and nature books for children and young adults. In May 2009, his book Gila Monsters won the Glyph Award as Arizona’s Best Children’s Non-Fiction Book from the Arizona Book Publisher’s Association.
In 2005, more than 93,000 Arizona first graders received a special edition copy of Storad’s Don’t Call me Pig! (A Javelina Story). In 2001, the Arizona Library Association honored Storad with the Judy Goddard Award as Arizona’s Children Author of the Year.

Carlisle, four others, honored at Chamber Awards
Local caterer Sue Carlisle was honored with the 2010 Sonny Dunn Citizen of the Year Award at the third annual Maricopa Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet.
Sue, husband Brett, and children Rylee and Kierra, have been residents of Maricopa for five and ½ years. The Carlisles own Straight to the Plate Catering, and formerly operated a local Entrees Made Easy franchise.
Sue Carlisle has been battling a life threatening disease for the past three years. Her fight has not only been an inspiration to those in Maricopa who know her but other lives all across the country are better because of her courageous and successful battle over this disease through experimental treatment.

Union Pacific working to improve Arizona rail lines
Union Pacific Railroad is investing nearly $42 million to improve its existing rail lines in Arizona. Projects underway in the first quarter 2010 include track renewal work in the Phoenix and Mesa areas, railroad tie replacement in Union Pacific’s Phoenix and Tucson rail yards and railroad tie replacement on Union Pacific’s main line between Casa Grande and Yuma.
When work is complete, crews will have installed 156,000 wood and 58,000 concrete railroad ties and 24 miles of welded rail and spread 140,000 tons of rock ballast to ensure a stable roadbed. The projects began in January and are scheduled to be completed by the end of May. The concrete ties for this project are being produced by Arizona-based companies.
