Applications now being accepted for Early Kindergarten in Maricopa
The Maricopa Unified School District is now accepting applications for Early Kindergarten for the 2009-2010 school year. Applications are available at each of the District’s six elementary schools.
Screening will be held at the individual school sites for any child that qualifies for an age exception (5 years old as of September 1st through December 31st, 2009). The District says it has enough available classroom space and is encouraging parents of qualified students to arrange a screening interview.
According to MUSD Assistant to the Superintendent, Burnie Hibbard, “In several proposed versions of the state budget, all funding for students with birthday after September 1st was cut. The current funding bill allows for funding for early Kindergarten students but does not balance the state budget. While we anticipate further cuts by the state we are not expecting them to cut this funding at this late date.” Read more

Mayor works with GPEC to bring new business to Maricopa
The Greater Phoenix Economic Council and Maricopa Mayor Anthony Smith returned from a job-recruitment trip to California Monday with a new business lead.
The delegation met with executives from three companies specializing in bio-engineering, recycling and solar energy. During the trip to the Greater Los Angeles area, GPEC and Smith worked to deepen Maricopa’s existing relationship with the bio-engineering firm.
Officials talked with the company about locating a manufacturing facility to Maricopa, which would complement a testing site it operates in partnership with the University of Arizona on 10 acres within the town. The company grows and manufactures bioseeds used to develop biofuel crops and has testing facilities in other U.S. cities. It is headquartered in L.A.

Closing sale continues at Secondhand Pages
The Store Closing Sale continues at Maricopa’s Secondhand Pages Bookstore.
This week, owner Jennifer Kacprowicz is offering a 40% discount on all store merchandise. The store’s shelving units are also up for a mere $25 apiece.
Secondhand Pages has been modestly successful in its two-year run, but Kacprowicz decided against signing a new, long-term lease due to current economic conditions.

Babeu: It’s time to bar convicted felons from County Government employment
Trust in government is important to any democracy. As the people charged with running government on a day to day basis, government employees must be especially trustworthy and honest in their jobs so as to enable government to maintain that trust.
Government employees at every level, be it public safety employees, administrators, or clerks, have been entrusted with duties and powers that make integrity especially important.
Yet, unfortunately, here in Pinal County that trust has been breached recently when convicted felons have been hired by our County Government.

Chairman David Snider holding Maricopa office hours on Tuesday, August 4th
Pinal County Board of Supervisors Chairman David Snider will hold his monthly Maricopa office hours on Tuesday, August 4th, from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm.
Chairman Snider will be at the interim Maricopa City Hall located at 45145 West Madison Avenue. If you would like to schedule a time to visit during his office hours in Maricopa, you can call his office at 836-0003 – otherwise it is first-come, first-served.
