City opens up kiosk signs to local businesses

(Photo by Sam McCallie)At their June 16th meeting, the Maricopa City Council passed an ordinance opening up the City’s roadside "kiosk signs" to local businesses, commercial developments, and non-profit organizations.

The familiar brown signs were erected around the City in 2007.  Originally the signs were restricted to local homebuilders, with one panel on each reserved for community facilities such as the Maricopa Public Library, Pacana Park and the Interim City Hall.

Since their inception, a number of local businesses have pushed for inclusion on the signs.  The Maricopa Chamber of Commerce has backed them in these efforts.  Due to the slowing economy which has caused many homebuilders to leave Maricopa, the City is granting their wish.

Board of Supervisors approves FY 2009-10 budget

Pinal County Board of SupervisorsFLORENCE – How do you properly set a budget in an environment of continued economic turmoil when the state, a key contributor to your budget is threatening to send you a sizeable IOU?  The answer, as the Pinal County Supervisors stated today, is that you must do it very carefully and be prepared to reassess in the future.

The Board of Supervisors approved a total County budget of $400.2 million, which includes a $0.20 reduction in the primary property tax.  This tax reduction represents a decrease of about $20 on a $100,000 home.

Last fiscal year’s budget was capped at $458 million but the county curtailed spending significantly though a hiring freeze, mid-year budget cuts, a freeze on travel and training and other budget balancing measures.  Just two years ago, the County’s budget was capped at $475 million.

Arizona DPS offers monsoon driving safety tips

Monsoon Lightning (Photo by Howard Waggner)The Arizona Department of Public Safety offers the following traffic safety tips to assist motorists during the monsoon season. A desert monsoon storm can be a thing of beauty to watch but it can also be dangerous or even deadly. Conditions during a monsoon can range from high winds and blowing dust to torrential rains which can create hazardous driving conditions:

First and foremost SLOW DOWN. The posted speed limit may not be a safe speed to travel in bad weather. On wet roads your vehicle will have less traction than on a dry road. Slower travel speeds allow for safer braking and stopping distances.
