Arizona unemployment rate rises in December
Arizona’s unemployment rate for December reflected a weakening economy and continued job losses as the average rose six-tenths of a percent from November (6.3%) to 6.9%. Because of holiday season hires, December usually shows job gains, but this time around posted a net loss of 12,400 jobs. The positive news is that Arizona’s numbers are still below the national unemployment average, which was 7.2% last month (6.8% in November).
Eight major sectors showed job losses, with three still posting gains. Goods-producing industries shed 6,700 and service-providing industries lost 5,700. As expected, construction lost jobs for the 16th consecutive month (-5,800); over the year, construction has shrunk nearly 21%.

Fire evacuates Maricopa Wells Middle School
Around noon today, smoke alarms went off in the multi-purpose room at Maricopa Wells Middle School, 45725 West Honeycutt Avenue. School personnel quickly evacuated students and staff, and called 911. Fire units from the Maricopa, Goodyear, Gila River, and Sun Lakes Fire Departments responded.
Fire units entered the ground floor of the building, and could smell smoke, but could not initially locate the fire. Thermal imaging revealed a “hot area” in the crawl space above the ceiling, so firefighters climbed to the roof of the building. A quick cut-through revealed smoldering insulation in the attic area. Fire crews were then able to quickly suppress the fire.
