Opinion: Trust your new City Council

On Election Day you are going to be asked to vote on Question 5. Question 5 is about trust. In May, you finalized the process of electing three new city council members and a new mayor. You put your trust in members of the community to help guide and direct Maricopa for at least the next 2 years. For at least two years each of these newly elected officials have the responsibility of acting on your behalf. A lot of trust goes into that.

The reasons you may have voted for certain individuals were many. While campaigning I heard over and over again that the residents of Maricopa wanted to see some action. The city was stagnant and decisions were not being made to improve the quality of life in Maricopa. Your votes decided to remove all incumbents and give four new people a chance to shape Maricopa. Question 5 is one of the tools that the newly elected council will use to shape your city.

Opinion: Despite timing, bond issue is worth supporting

When I was a small child I was egocentric, concerned only about my own needs and desires. As I matured, I grew beyond this egocentrism and began to care about others, their families, friends, and communities.

However, once in awhile, I manage to be careless, get caught up in my own little circle and basically get my head screwed on incorrectly! It takes friends, acquaintances, and listening to opposite viewpoints, to put things in perspective. Usually that results in a cranial adjustment.

As I considered my own self-interests, with the economy hurting, unemployment up and the stock market down, it’s seemed to be a less than stellar time to be talking about new bond issues or raising taxes.

Time running out to mail in early ballots for General Election

With one week left until Tuesday’s general election, Pinal County Recorder Laura Dean-Lytle would like to remind voters who received early ballots to get them in the mail as soon as possible.

“We want everybody who has an early ballot to vote, sign it and then mail it in so we can receive the ballot before Tuesday’s general election,” Dean-Lytle said.

If voters are unable to mail their early ballot before November 4th, they can turn it in at any polling location on the day of the general election.

“I would like emphasize that the polls will most likely be very, very busy on Tuesday,” Dean-Lytle said. “The most convenient way is to vote at home and mail your ballot in.”

Opinion: Profiting from your tax dollars

If Maricopa’s Question #5, the $65million bond issue, should pass this Nov. 4th; a few select parties aim to profit from your long-term taxpayer debt. This bond is being strongly supported by several entities with a single-item agenda: Make Money.

Several major supporters for a “yes” vote on this “all or nothing” bond measure are not even residents of the City of Maricopa. They’re developers and others who will continue to profit regardless of how much it costs YOU. You have to ask yourself; who really benefits from the passage of this bond?

Proponents of Question 5 use stock photos of children to tug at your heartstrings; making you think it’s all about, and for, the kids. Others see it simply as “investing in Maricopa’s future”. Make no mistake; what voters decide on November 4th is about the kids…the kids who will grow up to be taxpayers paying off this debt. And until the kids do start paying taxes, it’s up to you, me and Maricopa’s businesses.
