Legacy Traditional School director speaks out regarding construction delays

The Executive Director of Legacy Traditional School spoke out today regarding recent implications that delays in construction of Legacy’s new permanent campus were due to problems with the City of Maricopa.

Aaron Hale said that a reference to “a series of difficulties with the city”, in a email sent out to local media last week, was intended to refer to delays experienced in the past, and was not meant to imply that the city was currently holding up the project.

“City staff are doing all they can to help expedite this project, and ensure that we have the space needed to house all of our students by August 25th.”, Hale states, “We are very appreciative of all of their efforts and the genuine concern that they have for our students and the school in general.”

Local child loses fight with cancer

Maricopa resident Zachary Schumann, who has been battling cancer for the past three years, passed away this morning. The 8 year-old has been the focus of several local fundraising efforts, including a recent charity car wash.

Zack’s mother, Sara Schumann, posted this message on Zack’s website:

It is with a heavy heart, but peaceful mind, that we are posting that our angel Zack passed away last night at 12:15am. Joe and I (plus the hospice nurse, Michael) were with him. We kept him comfortable and know that he is no longer suffering mentally or physically and has found peace in God’s arms. We ask only that friends and neighbors give us and our families some time to grieve without any phone calls or visits. Thank you all for the love and support you have shown.

Our condolences go out to the Schumann family.  Rest in peace, Zack.

Maricopa Fire Department supports “Drowning Impact Awareness Month” in August

The sweltering August heat and the distractions of back-to-school add up to create the highest month for child drownings in Arizona. Maricopa Fire Department is teaming up with agencies and businesses throughout Arizona to prevent these tragedies.

August has been designated as Drowning Impact Awareness Month by the Drowning Prevention Coalition of Central Arizona. For children under the age of four, drowning is the leading cause of death; it is the second leading cause for children under age 14 – motor vehicle accidents are first.

Each year, thousands of children die as a result of drowning, and an equal number of near drowning victims suffer permanent, irreversible brain damage. These drownings not only occur in a backyard pool, but also in buckets, bathtubs, toilets, pet water bowls, canals and ponds.
