Airdate set for Lake Family radio appearance

Reiley Lake, and her parents John and Susan, will appear on the Ankarlo Morning show on news/talk KTAR (92.3 FM) this Wednesday, May 28th, at 11:35 am.  They’ll be discussing Reiley’s medical condition and the various fundraising efforts that have sprung up to help her.

The appearance was booked at the beginning of the month, but has been delayed due to host Darrell Ankarlo’s recent back surgery and longer-than-expected recovery period.

In the meantime, Reiley’s story has appeared on Ankarlo’s blog, thanks to producer Rob Hunter.

Construction starts on Maricopa’s new library – Groundbreaking ceremony scheduled

The City of Maricopa invites the community to join in marking a huge milestone for the City’s public library system – it’s the start of construction of the new Maricopa Public Library, the first civic building to be built in the City of Maricopa! Mayor Kelly Anderson and Vice Mayor Brent Murphree will host the ceremony on Tuesday, June 3rd, at 8:30 am at the northeast corner of Smith-Enke Road and Desert Greens Parkway.

The Maricopa City Council voted unanimously, 5-0, on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, to purchase the new building for the library.

Even with the higher gas prices, the Maricopa Police Department expects an increase in traffic this holiday weekend as people from the valley, and around the state, hit the road and pass through Maricopa on their way to the west coast and south of the boarder.

Residents have one more week to enroll in Parks & Recreation activities

The City of Maricopa has extended the deadline for parents to register for programs and events through Maricopa’s Parks & Recreation division to May 30, 2008.

Programs are available for youth, teens and adults; there are also one-day events for the family, including Big Surf, Sunsplash/Golfland and Gameworks.

Vekol Wash flooding closes Hidden Valley roads

FLORENCE- The Pinal County Department of Public Works would like to inform Hidden Valley residents of road closures due to flooding in the Vekol Wash.

Farrell Road, Ralston Road and Val Vista Road are all closed at the Vekol Wash until further notice.

The Public Works Department asks that all motorists obey the closures and not try to cross any flooded washes.

No construction closures over Memorial Day weekend

To help ease the treks of travelers heading in and out of the Valley over the Memorial Day weekend, ADOT says no construction closures are scheduled on freeways over the holiday, the traditional start to the summer travel season.

In addition, landslide repair work has been completed on State Route 87 (Duthie-Martin Highway), the primary route between the Phoenix area and Payson. ADOT crews this week have fully opened a four-lane section of SR 87 north of Sunflower which was limited to one lane in each direction for several weeks following the March landslide.

Challengers oust incumbents in Council race

Maricopa voters signaled their desire for change in Tuesday’s election. Marvin Brown and Carl Diedrich were elected to the final two openings on the Maricopa City Council defeating the men who currently hold those seats; Will Dunn and Kelly Haddad.

With 100% of the precincts reporting, and all early votes counted, Brown led the pack with 31.46% of the votes, followed by Diedrich with 26.64%. Dunn and Haddad garnered 21.07% and 20.40% respectively. 0.43% voted for write-in candidates. Out of 12,741 registered voters in the city, 1177 cast their ballots in this election.

ADOT Multimodal Planning Division Completes Statewide Rural Transit Needs Study

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) Multimodal Planning Division, in partnership with the Arizona Transit Association, recently completed the first comprehensive study of rural transit needs in Arizona.

Local transit needs are growing rapidly in rural Arizona where existing funding may not be available. The study reviewed existing transit planning efforts in rural communities statewide, and integrated them into a comprehensive statewide plan.
