Maricopa Fire Department presents Water Safety Day

Children of all ages can meet the firefighters, learn about drowning prevention and water safety at Water Safety Day, this Saturday, May 31st at Pacana Park.

“Teaching kids water safety is extremely important and will prevent accidents and drownings,” stated Public Safety Director Patrick Melvin. “Your children are the first defense you can use to prevent water incidents.”

In addition to water safety information, there will be two Maricopa fire trucks, an ambulance and a helicopter at the event. Children will be able to bounce in the bounce house and free snow cones will be distributed.

Maricopa Development Services Department recognizes outstanding superintendents and trade professionals in Maricopa

On Wednesday, May 28, 2008, the City of Maricopa’s Development Services Department honored nine individuals whose work in the City deserved recognition.

Mayor Kelly Anderson awarded the Outstanding Residential Superintendent to Glen Brandt from D.R. Horton. Brandt is known for his impressive record to produce homes with relative ease and is well regarded for his leadership and management skills. Brandt has excellent first time inspection ratios, and his work performance and inspection preparations are at the highest levels

Forum participants provide input on standards and policies for Development Services staff

On Tuesday, May 27, 2008 Maricopa’s Development Services Department held its first Stakeholders Forum.

The purpose of the open forum was to garner input on the development services standards, policies and requirements that are currently being reviewed and created. The stakeholders – homebuilders, developers, engineers and property owners involved in the development process – expressed a desire to provide input on policies and standards after a presentation by City staff at a Home Builders Association of Central Arizona (HBACA) meeting.

Olympic Gold Medalist offers swimming lessons through Maricopa Parks & Recreation

Two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Mike Troy and Olympic coach Mike Walker, owners of the Gold Medal Swim School, have partnered with the City of Maricopa’s Parks & Recreation program to offer swimming lessons this summer.

The program is open to residents of all ages and swimmers at all levels. Lessons last approximately 30 minutes and are held twice per week – Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Swimming lessons will begin on June 4, 2008 and will run through July 24, 2008, and will be held at the Ak-Chin Community Pool. Fees have been reduced to $75.00.

Recent rains, rising temps and green pools have mosquito teams on alert

FLORENCE- Normally this time of year Pinal County Division of Environmental Health Vector Program crewmates Tami Schuler and Garry Bouquot keep themselves busy trapping and testing mosquitoes for any signs of West Nile virus.

But now with the housing slow down another challenge to keep mosquitoes at bay has landed on their doorstep, so to speak: Foreclosed properties with swimming pools that have been neglected and are becoming breeding areas for mosquitoes.

Residents allowed back in homes

Residents that were evacuated from their homes due to a natural gas leak on Taft, south of McDavid, were allowed back in their homes at approximately 1:10 p.m.

“Southwest Gas in on the scene and the leak will be repaired today,” stated Assistant Fire Chief Wade Brannon.

There were no injuries or persons needing medical attention due to the gas leak.

The gas line was punctured due to construction in the area. This construction was unrelated to the gas line.

This morning at approximately 11:25 a.m., Maricopa Fire Department was alerted to a natural gas leak on Taft, south of McDavid.

The line was punctured during underground construction, and six homes in the immediate area have been evacuated.

Local family goes on the air to help their daughter

John and Susan Lake, of Maricopa, took to the Phoenix airwaves yesterday to talk about their daughter’s medical condition and what needs to be done about it.

2 year-old Reiley Lake has been plagued by a number of difficulties almost since birth. Her skill development has been lagging, she hasn’t grown in several months, and she’s dependent on a feeding tube for nutrition since she’s unable to eat.

Worst of all, the many doctors she’s seen in Arizona are unable to determine the root cause of all these maladies.  Therefore, the Lakes need to take Reiley to be examined by various specialists out-of-state.

Arizona to lose $228 million in federal funding without Highway Trust Fund fix

PHOENIX – Without an influx of funding, the federal Highway Trust Fund will face a $3.3 billion deficit over the coming year, translating into a potential loss of $228 million for critical Arizona transportation projects.

In data released by the American Road and Transportation Builders Association, the Transportation Construction Coalition and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, the potential impact to Arizona is made clear: $228.4 million in lost federal funds and an estimated loss of nearly 8,000 related jobs.
