Pearce to speak in support of local Senate candidate

Steve SmithMaricopa resident Steve Smith, candidate for Arizona State Senate, will be holding a “Meet and Greet” mixer this Friday at The Duke at Rancho El Dorado.

State Senator Russell Pearce, author of immigration bill SB 1070, will be speaking at the event as will House of Representatives candidate John Fillmore. Maricopa Mayor Anthony Smith will also be in attendance.

The event will be held in The Duke’s Silver Spur Restaurant from 6:45 to 9:00 pm. Refreshments will be provided along with food and drink specials for all who attend. The event is open to the public.

The Duke is located at 42660 West Rancho El Dorado Parkway.

Over 400 attend local Tea Party

(Photo: Howard Waggner/Maricopa360.com)The Maricopa Republican Club hosted its first Tea Party at Pacana Park on Sunday, May 16th, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm.  Over 400 people attended the event to hear a line-up of speakers talk about limited government, fighting tax increases, state’s rights and sovereignty, and taking back our Republic.

The speakers included JD Hayworth, Sheriff Paul Babeu, Don Goldwater, Lance Hurley (portraying Patrick Henry), Pinal County Republican Party Chairman Marty Hermanson, Tom Jenney (Americans for Prosperity), John Fillmore, State Representative Frank Pratt, Brenda Hermanson, Mike Robertson, George Farrell, and Jerry Hunt.

“Free Dump Day” happening this weekend

Butterfield Station LandfillThe City of Maricopa, the Pinal County Board of Supervisors, The Recycling Association of Maricopa, and Waste Management are sponsoring “Free Dump Day” this Saturday, April 10th, 2010.

Local residents who are looking to do some cleanup around the house and yard will have two locations to choose from, depending on their type of load.

Butterfield Station Landfill in Mobile will be accepting unwanted furniture, bulk trash, and other household waste, from 8:00 am to Noon. No commercial loads will be accepted.

The Recycling Association of Maricopa will be accepting appliances, electronics, computers, ink cartridges, cell phones, scrap metal, car batteries, and usable furniture, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. No liquid waste, or regular trash will be accepted.

Guns and Hoses tournament raises scholarship money for local students

(Photo by Howard Waggner)There were no sirens, injured people, laws broken, or fires to put out, but the members of the City of Maricopa Public Safety Department were out in full force at Pacana Park this past weekend.

On Saturday March 27th, the second annual Guns and Hoses Softball Tournament was held, raising over one thousand dollars for scholarships for two Maricopa High School seniors interested in pursuing a career in public service as a firefighter, police officer or paramedic. Two fire department teams, one police team and one civilian team competed in a round-robin style tournament that took up most of the afternoon.

Community of Hope hosting 5th annual “Easter Eggstravaganza” at Pacana Park

Egg Hunt 2010Maricopa’s Community of Hope Church will be hosting its 5th annual Easter Eggstravaganza on Saturday April 3rd. The event takes place at Pacana Park, located at 19000 North Porter Road, between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm.

Egg hunts will take place every 15 to 20 minutes for children from 1 year-old to 5th graders. Along with the egg hunts, children will be able to play games, have fun in the bounce houses, visit a petting zoo, and have their pictures taken with the Easter Bunny.

All of this is “absolutely free” of charge and is open to the entire community of Maricopa. Donations of non perishable items for the F.O.R. Maricopa food bank will be taken.

“Flicks for Food” to benefit local food bank

“Flicks for Food” will be held at Glennwilde soccer field, 18635 North Alan Stephens Parkway, starting at 6:30 pm.  There will be a 50/50 raffle, silent auction, and food and beverages will be available in exchange for donations.

Admission to the event is two (2) non-perishable food items.  All proceeds benefit F.O.R. Maricopa food bank.

Maricopa Seniors holding Home, Garden & Business Expo this weekend

mseniors_logoMaricopa Seniors, Inc. is presenting the 2010 Home, Garden & Business Expo on Sunday, March 21st, from 1:00 to 6:00pm, at Pacana Park.

The event features Kids Zone with bouncers, games and activities; brief presentations on topics like vegetable gardening, Xeriscape, alternative energy sources; food and beverages sold by Boy Scout Troop 993 and the Maricopa High School culinary department; and over 80 vendors, crafters, and non-profit organizations offering a wide variety of items.

“We’ve got some great people participating,” said event organizer Therese Starkey, President of Maricopa Seniors, Inc. “This event will showcase Maricopa as well as outside businesses and it’s a great opportunity for folks to learn about some of the great services offered by our local and home-based businesses. We’ll have landscapers, carpeting and tile, painting, crafters, pools and spas, Direct TV, animal rescue, and a whole lot more there. Bring the whole family because there’ll be something for everyone here!”

Pinal County Fair ready to provide non-stop entertainment

(Pinal County Fair)CASA GRANDE – “Family Fun for Everyone” is the theme of this year’s Pinal County Fair. Judging by the diversity of entertainment and exhibits, there will be something that will amuse and amaze everyone.

The Pinal County Fair takes place at the Pinal County Fairgrounds and Events Center from March 17th through 21st(. The fairgrounds are located at 512 South Eleven Mile Corner Road. Admission is only $8.00 for adults, $4.00 for children ages 6-12 and free for any child under the age of 6.

“I am excited about this year’s fair,” said Connie Lane, Pinal County’s Parks, Recreation and Fairgrounds Director. “We’ve been working on this event since the end of last year’s fair with the goal of providing non-stop entertainment and the best value for our fairgoers. I think we have accomplished that goal.”

Family Festival happening this weekend

(Photo by Sam McCallie)The Maricopa Business Center will be holding its 3rd Annual Family Festival this Saturday, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.

There will be bounce houses, face painting, balloon animals, plenty of food and drink, plus performances by Desert Star Gymnastics, Sequoia Pathway Academy’s cheer squads, Maricopa Black Belt Academy, and a Zumba Fitness demonstration.

There will also be a musical performance by the Irish band, Trotter’s Wake.
