They will hold their first meeting on August 2nd at 6:00 pm at the Maricopa Public Library, 41600 W Smith-Enke Road, and welcome anyone who is interested in History, especially the history of Maricopa, to join them.

(Photo: Howard Waggner/Maricopa360.com)A local family’s home was made a safer place this week due to a proactive father, the Maricopa Fire Department and the Valley of the Sun United Way.

On Saturday, a Maricopa fire crew installed a specialized smoke detector designed for the deaf and hearing impaired in their home. Christopher Nicholas recently moved to Maricopa with his wife and 6 year-old daughter and had a major problem with their home. Nicholas is deaf and he had no way of hearing the smoke detectors in an emergency. Knowing the importance of having smoke detectors, Nicholas came to the Maricopa Fire Department looking for help.

Local family slowly recovering after fire

(Photo by Sam McCallie)It’s been a slow road to recovery for a local family after their home went up in flames back in November.

The Mariano family’s single-wide mobile home, located on a farm near State Route 238 and Warren Road, was destroyed in a fire that claimed the life of 22 year-old Michelle Mariano, and badly burned her 28 year-old sister, Marian, and 1 year-old daughter Eden. Michelle’s 3 year-old son, Jaylen, escaped the fire unharmed and became a hero by helping Eden out of the burning home, thereby saving her life.

Since the fire, Marian and Eden have been in the Maricopa Medical Center’s burn unit in induced comas, in preparation for skin grafting.  Marian suffered burns to 19% of her body and the baby 47%.
