Orbitel scholarship recipients work to achieve dreams

Our future lies in the next generation and we are happy to help these winners as they work to achieve their goals.” The recipients’ plaques were inscribed with the Sue Atchley Ebaugh quotation “Within Our Dreams and Aspirations We Find Our Opportunities.”

Maricopa High places second in math comptetion

(Photo submitted by the Maricopa Unified School District)Maricopa High School placed second among all the schools that participated in the 34th annual Central Arizona Math competition held on April 15th.  Over 62 MHS students participated in the event.

Sara Troyer and Jenna Davila won the Level 1 Team Competition which consisted of 75 teams.

After the qualifier, David Westermayer, Trista Eckert, Victoria Piceno, Cole Davis, Cara O’Neal, Karissa Browning, Karla Munoz, Carson Rose, Tony Shum, and Jaden Warren qualified for the individual competition.

Most of these students placed in the top 25 individually in the competition out over 600 students participating.

Orbitel sponsoring scholarships for Maricopa High Seniors

(File photo)Orbitel Communications is sponsoring $1000 in scholarships for Maricopa High School seniors at awards night on May 13th. The two Orbitel scholarships in the amount of $500 each will recognize the student’s achievements in leadership, community service, and academics.

MUSD Business Department awarded Certificate of Excellence

Maricopa Unified School District #20 (Photo by Sam McCallie)Earlier this month, the Maricopa Unified School District won the Association of School Business Officials International’s (ASBO) Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting Program (COE) for excellence in the preparation and issuance of the fiscal year end 2009 school system.

The award recognizes the district’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) for the fiscal year end 2009.

The Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting Program was designed by ASBO International to enable school business officials to achieve a high standard of financial reporting. The award, the highest recognition for school district financial operations offered by ASBO, is only conferred to school systems that have met or exceeded the standards of the program.

Desert Wind put on lockdown over weapon report

(Photo by Howard Waggner)Desert Wind Middle School in Tortosa was put on lockdown yesterday while Maricopa Police searched for a gun reportedly brought on campus by a student.

Around 9:00 am, police received reports of gunshots near a school bus stop in Homestead. By the time police arrived on scene, the bus had already picked up the students and the area was deserted.

A short time later, a student reported to the Desert Winds administration that a fellow student had brought a gun to school. The adminstration notified police and the school was immediately placed on lockdown.

Santa Cruz running program receives national recognition

Santa Cruz Elementary SchoolMaricopa’s Santa Cruz Elementary School was one of 50 schools to receive a $2,000 grant from ING in 2009 to help students combat childhood obesity through school-based running programs.  Physical education teacher Tracy J. Dyll will share the success of Santa Cruz’s running program during the 2010 national convention of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD). Thousands of physical activity and health professionals will attend the conference March 16-20 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Dyll was one of two 2009 ING Run For Something Better (ING RFSB) School Awards Program recipients selected to receive a scholarship, sponsored by ING RFSB, to attend the national convention and share her experience from the awards program. Her presentation will be part of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) General Session with keynote speaker Olympic runner Jeff Galloway.

Maricopa High School band and orchestra receive positive ratings at recent events

Maricopa High SchoolThis past weekend the band and colorguard programs at Maricopa High School each made some notable and historical achievements.

On Friday, the band and orchestra traveled to McClintock High School for the ABODA Area Concert Festival. The orchestra received a rating of “good” and numerous praises from judges and spectators for a solid performance in spite of their small size.

The band received a rating of “excellent” which represents a significant achievement for playing before a tough panel of judges. This rating is their best to date in an ABODA concert festival and qualifies them to perform in the ABODA State Concert Festival for the first time in school history! They will travel to that festival on April 27th.

Maricopa High School hosting talent show

Maricopa High SchoolMaricopa High School Culinary Arts students are hosting a talent show this Friday in order to raise funds for future field trips.

The event will be Friday evening at 7:00 in the high school’s new gymnasium. The title is “MHS Talent Showcase 2010”.

The show will featuresingers, bands, dancers, rappers, and more. DJ James will be hosting the show for the second year in a row.

Admission is $2 for anyone with an ID from any Maricopa school, and $3 for anyone else above the age of 5. The show should be around 1 ½ to 2 hours long.

Maricopa HS announces upcoming music events

Maricopa High SchoolOn Friday, February 26th, the Maricopa High School Band and Orchestra will travel to McClintock High School in Tempe to perform at the ABODA Area Concert Festival. The Orchestra performs at 9:30 pm and the Band at 12:30 pm.

Saturday, February 27th, the MHS Winterguard “The Maricopa Gems” take the floor at the Winterguard Arizona Basha Show at Basha High School in Chandler. Maricopa performs at 10:33 am. This is the band’s first ever Winterguard competition.

The Gems will also be performing on March 6th at Casa Grande Union High School, March 20th at Gilbert High School, and March 27th at the Phoenix Coliseum for WGAZ Championships

Maricopa middle school student named one of Arizona’s top two youth volunteers

The Prudential Spirit of Community12 year-old Austen Pearce of Maricopa has been named one of Arizona’s top two youth volunteers for 2010 by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism. The awards program, now in its 15th year, is conducted by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

Austen was nominated by Maricopa’s Desert Wind Middle School. As a State Honoree, he will receive $1,000, an engraved silver medallion, and an all-expense-paid trip in early May to Washington, D.C., where he and Arizona’s other top honoree, 16 year-old Michael Young of Scottsdale, will join the top two honorees from each of the other states and the District of Columbia for several days of national recognition events. Ten of them will be named America’s top youth volunteers for 2010 at that time.
