Applicants needed for Parks, Recreation and Libraries Committee
Do you have a desire to give back to the community while providing important input affecting City decisions? Then you may be interested in applying to serve on the City of Maricopa Parks, Recreation and Libraries Advisory Committee.
The committee is comprised of seven community representatives and is responsible for aiding in the development of quality parks and recreation programs, identifying community recreational needs, recommendation of fees, policies and procedures and assisting in general park design. Recommendations from the committee are made to staff and Council for action.

Maricopa Library to celebrate Dr Seuss’ birthday
Join Auntie Pooh and Mama Oompa at the Maricopa Public Library on Saturday, February 27th for fun Seuss-related activities. Make your own grinch mask, and enjoy appearances by the Cat in the Hat!
Face painting happens from 10:00 am to noon, and 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Story time runs from 10:00 to 10:30 am featuring Horton Hears a Who, and from 2:00 to 2:30 pm with Green Eggs & Ham.

City announces new Community Services leaders
After an extensive search, the City of Maricopa has filled two leadership positions within the Community Services Department.
Joining the City staff as Director of Community Services is John Nixon. Nixon has 23 years of experience in government operations, serving in a variety of positions working on projects such as recreation programming, special events, departmental management, grant writing, and park planning and construction.
The position of Director was recently adjusted to streamline an emphasis on parks, recreation and libraries, and will have a heavy focus on facility construction and creative management of limited resources while meeting the challenge of expanding program offerings to the community.

Maricopa celebrates America’s independence at the 2009 Great American Barbeque
The City of Maricopa was home to another great celebration this past July 4th, as residents enjoyed the 4th Annual Great American Barbeque in honor of our nation’s Independence Day. A huge crowd packed Pacana Park to enjoy the free festivities. Many more watched the aerial display from their homes and block parties.

For the fourth year running, the City of Maricopa will host the largest Fourth of July community event in Pinal County, The Great American Barbeque.
This slice of Americana includes food vendors, a beer garden, live DJ, a fun water zone for the kids, a dance performance by Desert Sun Peforming Arts, whiffle ball tournament, and short films and cartoons on the big screen.
Then, starting at 9:00 pm, Maricopa’s annual fireworks spectacular begins!
Maricopa’s Great American Barbeque is presented by Great Western Bank, Orbitel Communications and Suz’s Cruises. Special thanks goes out to DVD & Game Depot for providing the movies and cartoons.

Record crowd packs Pacana Park for 5th Annual Maricopa Salsa Festival
The Fifth Annual Maricopa Salsa Festival was held Saturday evening at Pacana Park, drawing a record-setting number of attendees. The event, sub-titled “Salsa Under the Stars” had a 5:00 pm start time in order to take advantage of the cooler evening weather.

Record number of entries for this year’s Maricopa Salsa Festival
The fifth annual Maricopa Salsa Festival is next week. Registration closed today with record number of entries in the contest.
On Saturday, April 25th, you can join Food Network personality Ingrid Hoffman, of Simply Delicioso, in tasting over 24 hot salsas, 24 mild salsas, 7 “most unusual” salsas, 10 guacamole dips, and 5 bean dips. The ultimate winner will take home a $1,000 grand prize, plus a special 4-night stay at Plaza Pelicano’s Grand Beach Resort in Puerto Vallarta.
The Maricopa Salsa Festvial begain in 2005 with only a dozen salsas in the competition. Over the years it has grown. Last year saw 45 total entries, this year bloasts 70!

Aquafina Pitch, Hit & Run coming in May
Area youth are invited to come out to compete in the Aquafina Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run local competition in Maricopa. Pitch, Hit & Run is a national program that encourages local youth participation in America’s favorite pastime and emphasizes the fun of baseball competition. The competition will be held at 6:00 pm on Saturday, May 9th, at Pacana Park.
Pitch, Hit and run provides boys and girls ages 7 to 14 a free opportunity to showcase their excellence in the core baseball skills of pitching, hitting and running. Competitors have the chance to advance through four levels of competition, including the team championships at Major League ballparks and the national finals at the 2009 MLB All-Star Game.

New Maricopa Library on track for May opening
Maricopa’s new public library is nearing completion and should be ready to welcome its first readers on Memorial Day weekend.
The 8085 square-foot facility will feature books for adults, teens, and children, study desks, a children’s storytelling area, 20 public-access computer terminals, 2 small meeting rooms for those looking to do research or hold a teleconference, and a “community room” which can be reserved for small local events.
Ground was broken for the facility last June. As of last week, exterior work on the building was complete and the interior had been painted. The City should be able to take possession of the building next month and begin setting up furniture, stocking the shelves, and interior decoration.
