New Pinal County Sheriff ends photo radar

Less than a day into his term, new Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu has already fulfilled one campaign promise.  As of January 1st, photo radar speed enforcement is no longer used by PCSO.

Even before he officially took office, Babeu had already notified the camera operators, Australian-based Redflex Traffic Systems, that the Sheriff’s Office would not be renewing the contract which expired at the end of 2008.

“I am against it, not only because I’m a strict constitutionalist, but I believe it’s driven to create money for the government. It’s corrupting law enforcement for us to be partnered with a private entity that creates revenue, clearly that’s their interest,” Babeu said in a video statement that appears on the website of CameraFraud.com.  “I’ve never seen a photo radar camera arrest a drunk driver or arrest a person with a warrant, see if someone has insurance, or to just simply give directions to somebody.”

Arizonans urged to prepare for switch to digital television

(Phoenix, AZ) – The Arizona Department of Commerce, and its federal partner, the U.S. Department of Commerce, are reminding Arizonans that television signals will become digital on February 17th, 2009, requiring analog sets to use converter boxes to receive channels. Televisions that are connected to and receive satellite, cable or other subscription services do not need the converter boxes, nor do newer sets equipped with digital tuners.

There is still time to take advantage of a coupon from the federal government to be used toward the purchase of a converter box. Administered through the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Television and Information Administration (NTIA), the $40 coupon will defray most of the cost of a converter system, bringing the price down to about $10 or less, and can be requested online at https://www.dtv2009.gov/. The NTIA-certified devices can be purchased at any one of 35,000 retailers nationwide, including local department and discount stores.

From the desk of Pinal County District 3 Supervisor David Snider

As everyone takes a deep breath and slowly exhales, the New Year of 2009 is underway – and where it’ll stop, nobody knows. But there are several things we already know about this new year of ours: the economy at large and in a number of specific sectors (housing construction comes to mind) is going to continue faltering before bouncing off the bottom and heading upwards; local governments will be dealing with radically diminishing revenues and, despite increasing demands for services, will be reducing workforce sizes; the phrase “interesting times” will be used more times by more people than the words “like,” “you know,” and “uh-huh.”

Grain elevator explosion rocks Maricopa

At approximately 9:15 this morning, the Maricopa Fire Department responded to a report of an explosion at Arizona Grain Company located at 38501 West Cowtown Road, near Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway and White-Parker Road, in Maricopa. Numerous other agencies responded as well for automatic aid to the units already on scene.

Three workers were treated by Maricopa Paramedics on scene and then flown to Maricopa County Medical Center with first and second degree burns to their face and hands as a result of the powerful dust explosion.

Fire investigators have determined the origin of the initial explosion was in one of the four vertical grain elevator legs with a secondary explosion reportedly caused by the first and subsequent fire ball to the subterranean grain elevator network. The explosion could be felt and heard throughout the City of Maricopa. The tremendous force of the explosion was such that it sheared six 7/8 inch bolts to a truck scale lifting a semi loaded with grain weighing approximately 80,000 pounds.
